Short answer: both phones are real and on sale in China from 23 September, starting at CNY 5,999 for the 18 Pro and CNY 6,999 for the 18 Pro Max, which is roughly AED 3,290 and AED 3,840 before any local markup. They are not in the UAE yet. Xiaomi says a global launch follows later this year, and nothing is listed on Amazon.ae, so anyone who needs a phone this month is buying the current generation.

What Xiaomi actually launched

Two phones, both running the newest generation of flagship mobile silicon. The 18 Pro is the first retail phone anywhere using the standard version of that chip. The 18 Pro Max takes the higher clocked variant, which is the split Xiaomi has used for a couple of generations now and is mostly a sustained load difference rather than something you feel opening apps.

The rest of the spec sheet is more interesting than the chip, which is a sentence you do not get to write often.

The displays, and the privacy trick

Both use 2K resolution panels with a variable 1Hz to 120Hz refresh rate, rated at 4,000 nits peak brightness and covered in Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass 3. The 18 Pro has grown to 6.4 inches. The 18 Pro Max stays at 6.9 inches.

The headline feature is a hardware level privacy screen, which narrows the viewing angle so the person next to you on the Metro cannot read your messages. Rival flagships have shipped something similar, but this version goes further in a way that matters day to day: it can trigger by location, and it covers notifications, floating windows and split view apps rather than just the main app. There is a dedicated button on the left edge to toggle it.

Whether you care depends entirely on whether you read private things in public. If you do, this is genuinely the most useful thing on the phone. If you do not, it is a spec line.

Cameras

Identical on both models, which is a welcome change from the usual habit of gating the good sensor behind the bigger phone.

A 200MP periscope with a sensor that size is the unusual part. Most phone telephoto cameras fall apart the moment light drops, because the sensor behind them is tiny. This one is not tiny. That is the claim worth testing when review units land.

The rear screen is finally doing something

The second display on the back carries over from last year, but Xiaomi has wired its AI assistant into it. You can now ask it to build small apps for the rear panel: a water drinking reminder, an egg timer, a recipe prompt. It also does custom AI wallpapers and widgets.

Honest assessment: most of that is a demo. The one genuinely good use of a rear screen has always been using it as a viewfinder for the main cameras, so you can shoot yourself with the good lenses instead of the front one. That still works and it is still the reason to want it.

Batteries and charging

This is where the gap with phones sold here becomes embarrassing.

An 8,500mAh cell in a 6.9 inch phone is a lot, and 100W wired charging means you top up over a coffee rather than overnight. Both ship on HyperOS 4 with IP69 rated dust and water protection, which in a city that alternates between construction dust and humidity is not a throwaway spec.

China prices, and what they mean for the UAE

Launch pricing in China, with a rough dirham conversion:

There is also a red special edition with transparent elements on the back at the top of each range, alongside the standard black, white, pink and blue.

Treat those conversions as a floor, not a forecast. Chinese launch pricing has historically landed well under the eventual global price for this series, so budget for more when it reaches shelves here. Xiaomi has confirmed a global launch later this year without naming a date or a market list, and the UAE usually follows the European rollout rather than leading it.

What you can buy right now

Nothing from the 18 Pro series. We checked Amazon.ae on 25 September and the closest listings are current generation models, not the new phones. We do not point buy buttons at pages that do not exist.

The current flagship that is actually in stock is the Xiaomi 17T Pro at AED 2,899 for the 12GB and 512GB version bundled with a photo printer, and that listing is UAE type approved, which matters more than people realise. Grey imports of China only models arrive without local warranty support and occasionally without the software features the region expects.

Our take

The 18 Pro series is the most convincing flagship announcement of the month, and almost none of that is down to the chip. A 200MP periscope on a large sensor, a privacy display that covers notifications rather than just apps, an 8,500mAh battery and 100W charging add up to a phone that solves problems people actually have.

The catch is that you cannot buy one. A China launch with a vague global window means realistically months, and by then the pricing question resets. If your phone died this week, buy something available and stop reading launch coverage. If you are on a working phone and can wait, this is the one worth waiting for, and the smart move is to see the UAE price before deciding anything, because that conversion above is optimistic.

We will update this page when a local listing appears.
