Short answer: the Fitbit Air is a fitness tracker that deliberately has no screen, at AED 444 on Amazon.ae in the UAE. That sounds like a downgrade and mostly is not. If you already ignore notifications on your wrist and only ever open the app in the morning, this is the version of a tracker you actually use. If you want the time on your wrist, buy something else.

A tracker that refuses to be a watch

Every tracker sold in the last decade has crept in the same direction. Add a screen, make the screen bigger, put notifications on it, then a few apps, and eventually you are wearing a small phone that also counts steps. The Air goes the other way and removes the screen entirely. There is nothing to look at. There is nothing to tap.

What is left is a pebble of sensors in a fabric band. It reads heart rate, it tracks sleep, it counts activity, and it sends all of that to your phone. You read your numbers on the phone, in the morning, like a person checking a report rather than a person checking a wrist every ninety seconds.

That is a real design decision and not a cost saving one, because the price sits where small screened trackers sit. You are paying the same money to get less hardware and, if the idea works on you, more of your attention back.

The Obsidian version is the one to buy if you want it to disappear. It is a dark woven band with a matte buckle, and on the wrist it reads as a plain fabric bracelet rather than a piece of health equipment. In an office or at a dinner nobody clocks it as a tracker.

The sensor is a small pebble that presses into the band and clicks out again in seconds, which is how the same unit moves between a day bracelet, a workout band and a sleep band. That matters more than it sounds, because the usual reason a tracker stops getting worn at night is that the daytime strap is uncomfortable to sleep in.

Battery is up to seven days, and five minutes on the charger buys about a day. That second number is the useful one. A week long battery still dies eventually, normally on a morning you have no time, and a five minute top up while you shower solves it.

The Lavender version, AED 489

Identical tracker, lighter band, silver buckle, and about ten dirhams more. There is no functional difference between the two and no reason to pay the premium unless you prefer the look.

One practical note for this country. A light fabric band worn every day in this climate will show marks faster than a dark one, and fabric that goes through sweat, sunscreen and a gym session needs rinsing. If the tracker is going to live on your wrist through Dubai summer, the darker band is the lower maintenance choice.

What the coaching actually is

The tracking itself costs nothing beyond the hardware. Heart rate, sleep, activity, all of it works out of the box with no fee attached.

The part that is sold separately is the coaching layer. It reads what the tracker collected and turns it into advice that adapts as your week changes, and it runs on Google's own Gemini models. The tracker comes with a three month trial, after which it is a subscription.

Our honest read: treat the trial as the test. Coaching that tells you to sleep more when you slept badly is not worth a monthly fee to anybody. Coaching that notices a pattern you had not spotted might be. Three months is long enough to find out which one you got, and cancelling leaves you with a tracker that still does its job.

Who should buy it

Buy it if you keep abandoning trackers. Most people stop wearing one because the screen turns it into another thing demanding attention, or because it is uncomfortable in bed. The Air removes the first problem by design and addresses the second with the swappable band. For a lapsed tracker owner this is the most interesting device in the category right now.

Buy it if sleep is the number you care about. A tracker only measures the nights you actually wear it, and a soft fabric band you forget about gets worn far more consistently than a hard cased watch. Consistency beats sensor specifications.

Do not buy it if you want the time on your wrist. There is no screen. Not a small one, not a dim one. If checking a watch is part of your day, this will irritate you inside a week and no amount of app polish fixes that.

Do not buy it for serious training. It reads heart rate and activity well enough for general fitness, but an athlete who wants live pace, zones and structured workouts on the wrist during a session is buying the wrong device. You cannot see anything mid workout.

Questions people are asking

How much is it here?
AED 444 in Obsidian and AED 489 in Lavender on Amazon.ae. Both in stock when we checked.

Does it really have no screen?
Correct. There is no display of any kind. Everything is read in the phone app.

How long does the battery last?
Up to seven days, with about a day of use from a five minute charge.

Will it work with my iPhone?
Yes. It supports iOS and Android both.

Is there a subscription?
Not for tracking. Heart rate, sleep and activity all work for free. The AI coaching needs Google Health Premium and ships with a three month trial.

Can I sleep in it?
That is one of the things it is built for. The sensor moves into a sleep band, and with no screen there is nothing to light up in the dark.
