Short answer: the choice is not about which tracker is better, it is about which phone you carry. An iPhone talks to the AirTag and cannot set up a SmartTag2 at all. A Galaxy phone talks to the SmartTag2 and needs a separate app to do anything with an AirTag.

Two trackers, two prices, one question

Both tags do the same job. You attach one to something you would rather not lose, and an app shows you roughly where it was last seen. The difference is who is watching for it on your behalf, and that is decided entirely by the phone in your pocket.

Apple AirTag, AED 100

Apple's tag is the one most people picture when they hear the word tracker. It is a small white disc with a metal back, it takes a standard coin battery you can replace yourself, and it appears in the Find My app next to your other Apple gear.

Its strength is the size of the crowd. Any iPhone passing close enough can report where the tag was, and Dubai has iPhones everywhere, so a tag in a busy place updates often. That is what makes it good for a bag inside an airport, where hundreds of people walk past while it waits on a belt.

Its limit is the same thing. Out past the city the crowds thin and updates stop. On the road to Liwa, or parked at a remote site, a tag can sit silent for hours. That is not a fault, it is how the network is built, and it is worth knowing before you rely on one to find something in the desert.

The battery lasts about a year and the phone warns you when it is low. If a tag that is not yours travels with you, your phone tells you that too, and the tag eventually starts chirping. Both of those exist to stop the tag being used to follow a person, and both are on by default.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, from AED 69

Samsung's tracker starts at less than half the price and does the same core job through the SmartThings Find app. It reports to the same kind of crowd, in this case Galaxy phones, which are common here but not as common as iPhones. In a Dubai mall the gap is small. In a quieter area it can genuinely matter, and it is the reason an iPhone owner should not buy one on price alone.

The one hard rule is compatibility. A SmartTag2 pairs through Samsung's app and needs a Galaxy phone. It will not set up on an iPhone and an iPhone cannot read where it is. That is not a quirk, it is the product.

Where it pulls ahead is shape. It is a flat rectangle with a hole for a keyring, so it hangs on keys or a bag loop without buying anything extra, and the battery is built to last longer than the previous model.

Side by side

AirTag. AED 100. Works with iPhone. Round disc, coin battery, about a year per cell. Best network coverage inside UAE cities.

SmartTag2. AED 69, both white and black. Needs a Galaxy phone. Flat rectangle with a keyring hole. Cheaper by about a third, and still the cheaper one to buy three of.

Both. No monthly fee, no subscription, no GPS, and no signal of their own beyond a short range Bluetooth ping.

Specifications

AirTag 2nd generation. Diameter 31.9mm, height 8mm, weight 11.8g. Rated IP67, so a drop in a puddle is survivable. Bluetooth for proximity finding, a second generation ultra wideband chip for precise direction finding, NFC so a stranger can tap it to see your contact details in Lost Mode, a built in speaker, and a user replaceable CR2032 coin cell.

Galaxy SmartTag2. A flat rectangular tag with a keyring opening, Bluetooth low energy, water and dust resistant, a speaker for ring alerts, and a battery rated to last considerably longer than the model it replaced.

Which one to buy

If you carry an iPhone, buy the AirTag. At AED 100 it is the one that works with the phone in your pocket and the network that covers this city best. Nothing about the SmartTag2 price makes it sensible for an iPhone, because it will not run.

If you carry a Galaxy, buy the SmartTag2. At AED 69 it costs about a third less and does the job, and adding a second or third for keys and a bag is cheap enough to do without thinking about it.

What we would not do is buy either one expecting it to work where there are no phones. Neither is a GPS unit and neither is sold as one. If you need live tracking out in the desert or on a boat, this is the wrong category of device and spending more on a fancier model does not change that.

Questions people are asking

How much do these cost in Dubai?
The AirTag 2nd generation is AED 100 on Amazon.ae. The Galaxy SmartTag2 is AED 69 in white. Both were in stock when we checked.

Do AirTags work in the UAE?
Yes, inside cities. Find My locates a tag by hearing from nearby iPhones, so coverage is dense in Dubai and thin once you leave built up areas.

Will a SmartTag2 work with an iPhone?
No. It pairs through Samsung's own app and needs a Galaxy phone. An iPhone cannot set one up or read where it is.

Which is better for a checked bag?
For an iPhone owner, the AirTag. An airport is full of phones, so a bag is usually located within minutes of landing.

Do I need a subscription?
No. Both work without a monthly fee. You pay for the tag and that is the end of it.
