Short answer: the iPhone Duo is real, it folds, and it starts at AED 8,499 in the UAE. Preorders open 16 October, shipping 23 October. It is the most expensive iPhone this market has seen, and the first one Apple has shipped with a hinge.

What Apple actually announced

At the Surprise and Shine keynote on 9 September, Apple showed the first folding iPhone. It is called iPhone Duo, and it opens like a book. Closed, you get a 5.4 inch outer screen. Open, a 7.6 inch inner screen, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The specification that matters more than either number is that both screens use the same aspect ratio. That sounds like trivia. It isn't. The reason folding phones have annoyed people for six years is that apps get thrown between two differently shaped canvases and redraw badly every time you open or close the thing. Matching the ratios is Apple arriving late and fixing the boring problem instead of the exciting one. Whether it works in practice is a question for reviewers with retail units, not for a launch day writeup.

UAE pricing and dates

For context, AED 8,499 is roughly what a decent gaming PC costs, and about nine times the price of the TCL QLED we recommend in our TV guide. It is the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever sold in this market. Go in with that framed properly.

How that price compares

AED 8,499 works out to roughly 2,300 US dollars. Apple's own American price for the same 256GB model is 1,999 dollars. Even after you strip the 5 percent VAT that is baked into the UAE figure and which the US sticker price leaves off, buyers here are paying a few hundred dollars more than buyers in Cupertino. That gap is normal for Apple hardware in this market, but it is worth seeing plainly before you decide the launch price is reasonable.

Against the rest of the folding market it looks better than you would expect. Apple has not used the hinge as an excuse to charge a novelty premium, and the launch price landed lower than most people watching this category had predicted. For a first generation product from a company that usually charges for the privilege of being early, that is the surprise of the announcement.

Supply is the open question. First generation folding panels are rarely produced in volume at launch, so expect the early weeks to be a lottery rather than a purchase.

The hardware

Inside is the A20 Pro, built on a 2nm process. Apple pairs it with a vapour chamber and splits the battery into two cells, one in each half of the phone, which is how a device this thin claims all day endurance. Apple's own figure is up to 24 hours of typical use with the screens used equally, stretching further if you mostly stay on the outer display.

Cameras are two 48MP Fusion sensors on the back, a main and an ultra wide, with 4K Dolby Vision video at 120fps. There is a 12MP camera above the outer screen, and a second FaceTime camera hidden beneath the inner display so it does not interrupt the panel.

The frame mixes titanium and aluminium. It is rated IP68, tested to six metres for half an hour, which is notably better than the IP48 on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the first genuinely reassuring durability number anyone has put on a folding phone. Both screens run ProMotion at 120Hz with a nano texture finish, peaking at 3000 nits outdoors. Apple Pencil support on either screen arrives later in the year.

One thing worth knowing before you order: it is eSIM only. No physical tray. UAE networks do support eSIM, so that side is covered, though it is worth confirming the details with your own operator before you order. It also makes travelling on a cheap local SIM more annoying than it used to be.

The camera tricks are the interesting part

The specs are predictable. The software built around the hinge is not. Duo Preview puts a live viewfinder on the outer screen so whoever you are photographing can see their own framing. Smart Take watches the scene and fires the shutter itself when it decides everyone is posing. Duo FaceTime mirrors a call onto the outer display so a second person standing next to you can join in without leaning over your shoulder. There is also Kid Cue, which plays Peanuts animations on the front screen to get a toddler to look at the lens.

These are the features that justify a folding phone existing, and they are the ones no slab can copy. They are also the sort of thing that either becomes muscle memory in a week or gets switched off and forgotten. We will know which by November.

Where to preorder

Preorders go through Apple directly. Amazon.ae has no listing for it yet, and we will not point a buy button at a page that does not exist.

The page is live now with every storage tier and its price, but you cannot place the order yet. Preorders open at 4pm UAE time on 16 October and the phones ship from 23 October. Worth opening the page before then and deciding on the tier, because the folding model is the one most likely to slide into a later delivery window within the first hour.

Amazon.ae has no listing for the Duo and we will not point a buy button at a page that does not exist. If you want an iPhone in your hand before late October, the current flagships are there today and both now sit well under this price: the iPhone 17 Pro 256GB at about AED 4,179 and the 17 Pro Max 256GB at about AED 4,566, which is barely half what the Duo asks.

Should you buy one

Probably not the first batch, and not at AED 8,499, unless the folding format is something you have specifically wanted for years.

Every first generation Apple product has a second generation that fixes something. This is Apple's first hinge, its first crease, its first folding display supply chain. The engineering looks more careful than the competition's, and the IP68 rating suggests they took the failure modes seriously. None of that is the same as three years of field data on how the panel ages in a climate where a phone sits in a 45 degree car.

If you want the best iPhone camera in a shape that already works, the iPhone 18 Pro Max exists and costs considerably less. If you want a big screen for reading and multitasking, an iPhone plus a cheap iPad still beats this on price and on screen area. If you want a phone that folds and you want it from Apple, this is the only one there is, and by the standards of folding phones it looks like the most serious attempt yet.

We are not linking preorders. The device is not on sale, listings do not exist yet, and any buy button pointed at it today goes somewhere we cannot vouch for. When Amazon.ae stock is live and real, this page gets updated with a real link.
