The Sinking City 2 Review — Lovecraftian Horror Done Right
The original Sinking City had a great idea trapped in a mediocre game. The sequel's fix? A full pivot to survival horror, in the Resident Evil mold — and it's the best decision the series could have made. Reviews for Sinking City 2 are significantly stronger than the first game, and after playing it, that's no surprise.
The pivot works
Dropped into the flooded, 1920s city of Arkham, you're not an investigator with an inventory of clues this time — you're a survivor with limited ammo, a flashlight, and a growing sense that something is wrong with the water. The survival-horror framework suits the Lovecraftian material far better than the original's open-world detective structure. Resource scarcity and atmosphere reinforce each other: you're never comfortable, which is exactly the point.
Combat and tension
Combat is deliberate and weighty, with the game borrowing the right lessons from Resident Evil — limited resources mean every encounter matters, and the monstrosities you face are genuinely unpleasant to fight. The game's descriptions of its creatures as "delightfully gruesome" aren't wrong. It's horror that commits, and it lands.
Performance and where to play
On PS5, this is a couch-horror essential — the dark, atmospheric scenes hit harder on a big screen in a dark room. On PC, it supports ultrawide and high refresh rates, which makes the dread smoother (if that's a thing). Both versions run well; the game's moody lighting does a lot of work, so a decent monitor with good contrast (like our picks here) is worth having.
Verdict
The Sinking City 2 is a confident, gruesome, atmospheric survival horror game that finally does its source material justice. If you like Resident Evil or horror games that respect your intelligence, buy it. If you're easily scared, also buy it — fear is the point.
